A Philosophy of Design
Process is the most essential element of design,
for it is through process that we change the world
Kick-off Meeting
Site Visit
The initial site visit is a complimentary and crucial first step.
By walking through the location with you, we can better explore the existing conditions and discuss your goals firsthand. This step is one of the most important parts of our process, as it allows us to gather the essential information needed to create a conceptual design that is both beautiful and thoughtfully tailored to your needs.
As-Built Documentation
You've officially partnered with BATL Group to design your project.
We'll start with a kick-off meeting to get a better understanding of your project's goals, organization, and responsibilities. It’s a collaborative session where you can freely ask questions and share your vision—whether that's through inspiration photos, sketches, or a list of your most important "must-haves." The insights we gather here will be used to develop a work plan that guides the project from start to finish.
Have a renovation or addition project?
An understanding of the existing space is an important part of the design journey. Our team will take field measurements of the interior and exterior building. We not only measure overall room dimensions but also note crucial details like the location of windows, doors, and any existing utilities or built-in features. This allows us to create a floor plan of the current layout.
In addition to measurements, we take a complete photographic record of each room and key areas. These photos and videos provide a vital visual reference that allows us to recall specific details like the style of a light fixture to the location of an electrical outlet. This visual documentation helps us integrate our new design with the existing structure.
First Step
You've made the decision to contact BATL Group.
To help you navigate the process, the diagram below details the key steps we'll take together to turn your vision into a reality.
After our initial meeting, we'll use all the information we've gathered to begin creating a preliminary design concept. This is where we take the ideas and goals we discussed and establish a conceptual framework, creating the foundation for your project's design.
Pre-Design
Programming
Have a vision, but no plan?
That's exactly where programming comes in.
This is where we dive deep into your needs and aspirations. We begin by listening to your vision and then guide you through a collaborative process to define clear project goals, discuss key ideas, and uncover new opportunities for your design. We then translate these conversations into diagrams that map out spatial relationships and adjacencies. This allows for a design that is not just beautiful but also highly functional and tailored specifically to you.
Schematic Design
Interior Design
The schematic design phase is where we bring your vision to life. Working collaboratively, we'll take the conceptual framework from the pre-design phase and develop the overall look, feel, and layout of the project. We'll explore various options through sketches, preliminary floor plans, and 3D models to establish the project's direction before moving into the next phase, design development.
Looking to elevate the interior design of your building?
The interior of your building is where your personality comes to life. We know that selecting every material, finish, and fixture can feel overwhelming, which is why our on-staff interior designers are here to guide you every step of the way. We'll bring your ideas to life with a 3D rendering and a curated selection of materials and finishes, so you can feel confident and excited about every decision you make.
Design Development
With the schematic design approved, we move into the design development phase. This is where we refine the overall concept into a more detailed and technical design. We will begin to finalize key decisions on materials, building systems, and specific design aspects. This stage is also crucial for coordinating with any consultants for all parts of the project to align with the project vision.
Building Permit Coordination
For complex projects, early building permit coordination is a good idea. This allows us to get feedback from the city on any potential concerns and address them early in the design process. This proactive approach helps ensure a smoother, faster transition to a building permit, and we are here to assist you with that process if needed.
After the design development phase, we create the construction drawings. This is a set of comprehensive documents that guides the building process. Our team details the project drawings which are then used as a basis of design by the builder or general contractor to construct the project.
With your design now finalized and our services fulfilled, we're excited to see your vision come to life. We're here to assist you in selecting the right contractor for your project and can answer any questions you may have on the next steps.

Contractor Selected
Ready to build? We have you covered.
We partner with a select group of skilled contractors who share our value for quality craftsmanship. They can assist with everything from permitting and cost estimates to feasibility studies, providing a smooth transition from design to construction. Let us connect you with one of our partnered contractors today.
Start of Construction
Coordination with Contractor
After your building permit has been secured and a contractor has been selected, construction can begin. If you've chosen one of our valued partner contractors, they will work closely with you to manage the entire build process.
Questions often arise from the contractor during the construction process regarding design intent. Our team at BATL Group works closely with your contractor to provide guidance. We are here to serve as a resource so that any on-site questions can be addressed and your project aligns with the original design vision.
Building Permitting
Have questions about building permits?
The permitting process for building a project typically involves several key steps: first, you must research local regulations and determine the type of permits needed. Then, you fill out the permit application form, confirming all details are accurate and complete. Submit your application along with the required plans and documentation to the local authority for review and pay any applicable fees. Fees can vary based on project size and complexity.
Once the building permit is approved, you can begin construction while meeting compliance with safety and building standards. Some inspections will be required at various stages of construction, and the building permit will need to be visible at the construction site for inspectors to see.
Beyond Construction
End of Construction
From those initial sketches to the final day of construction, it's been an incredible journey. Seeing the project come to completion is a moment of shared celebration. The vision we developed together has now become a living, breathing reality, and we are thrilled to see your new space ready to be experienced.
At BATL Group, we believe in building lasting relationships. We would love to hear your thoughts and feedback on your experience. Your input is vital as it helps us to grow and provide the best possible service for every client.
Cycle of Design
Our process is designed to be recurrent. We conclude each phase by using the knowledge we've gained to start the next one, building on what we've accomplished.
