The transformation of Fire Station No. 16, originally located at 1519 Nogalitos, is a powerful story of adaptive reuse. The building, with its rich Italian Renaissance and Spanish Eclectic Revival influences, offers a unique opportunity to blend the past and present. While its historical style provides a strong aesthetic foundation, it's the building's utilitarian feel that truly presents a canvas for modern living.

Built in 1921, the fire station’s rugged, straightforward design was a product of its time—a government building constructed after World War I to be functional and durable. This purposeful design leaves behind a legacy of high ceilings, durable materials, and a sense of openness. The goal of this project is to honor that legacy, not erase it. Original elements, such as the oversized bay doors once used for fire engines or the location of the fire pole, can be preserved or reimagined as architectural focal points, serving as a constant reminder of the building’s history.

The open bay that once housed fire trucks are perfect for creating an expansive, open concept living area. The tall windows and high ceilings designed to accommodate large equipment now flood the home with natural light and create an airy, light-filled atmosphere. A modern kitchen and living room can seamlessly blend into the historical shell, while the more intimate spaces, like bedrooms and bathrooms, can be carved out of the building’s interior. This conversion is not just about building a home; it’s about creating a living testament to a building's history, giving it a new purpose long after its service was complete.
